about
Jonah, my son, asked me if I'd ever written a song with his name in it. I had to tell him "not yet."
To this day, I've only ever written one song about him and it was "Hello Baby," written while his mom was still pregnant with him, about all the excitement and fear, joy and anxiety which naturally joins the process of waiting for the baby to arrive.
Of course, he knows this song. I used to sing it to him in his crib and then as he grew into his "big boy bed" and, now that he's 9, I mostly play it when he's around the house somewhere. I can hear him singing along to himself from wherever he is.
I hadn't planned to pre-release this track from the upcoming album "The Quake," but it's his birthday today and I'm feeling a lot of love for and pride in him. So, here's a surprise, early release of "Hello Baby."
lyrics
Hello baby
I can’t see you, but I know where you are
Warm and safe with a journey so far
When you move, it’s a comfort
It ain’t much, but I love it
It makes me smile
Hello baby
I don’t know you will we get along
When will I learn you and will you sing my song
And when you cry can my breath
And my voice and my chest
Soothe your ears
When you roll against my fingertips
I know you feel me there too
How I long to feel your fingertips when they’re
Holding me close to you
Will you be scared?
Will you worry?
Will you revere something that’s worthy?
And, when you fall down, when will you rise up?
Will I be stronger than the hardest stuff?
I will
